BREAKING: Certificates of vaccination 'to be expected' for travel, Trudeau says

"Obviously, as was the case pre-pandemic, certificates of vaccination are a part of international travel to certain regions, and are naturally to be expected when it comes to this pandemic and the coronavirus."

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government was looking "very, very carefully" at the issue of "getting back to normal." Trudeau made the comment on Tuesday after being asked about certificates of vaccination for travel, often called "vaccine passports."

"Obviously, as was the case pre-pandemic, certificates of vaccination are a part of international travel to certain regions, and are naturally to be expected when it comes to this pandemic and the coronavirus," said Trudeau.

"How we actually roll that out in alignment with partners and allies around the world is something that we're working on right now to coordinate. I can assure that our decisions will be based on science and the fact that those decisions and discussions are ongoing right now, means that we will be aligned with our partners around the world."

Trudeau said that Canada was working with international allies in working on international travel documents for vaccines.

"We are working on it on a scientific basis, and we will have more to announce when we have to announce. Right now, we're focused on getting through this pandemic and being prepared to come roaring back once we're through out."

Last week, White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Jeffrey Zients announced in a briefing that the government would not be exploring the issuing of federally mandated "vaccine passports" in the US.

"Let me be clear that the is not now nor will we be supporting a system that requires Americans to carry a credential," said Zients. "There'll be no federal vaccination database, no federal mandate requiring everyone to obtain a single vaccination credential."
