Paul Vallas, former CEO of Chicago Public Schools is the first candidate for Chicago mayor to advance to the April 4th runoff election. The AP announced Vallas' victory at 7:45pm EST. If no candidate wins 50% or more, the election on April 4th will be necessary.

Local News ABC 7 reports that an initial slow turnout "may be due to a surge in voters choosing to mail in their ballots - which could lead to a dayslong delay in learning who makes the runoff." As a result of this, the results of the election may not be known for days

ABC adds: "While this will not go down in history as the worst turnout in a mayoral election in Chicago, the headline might be that older voters carried the day."

At 8:01 pm EST, Democrat incumbent Lori Lightfoot was trailing in distant third place with only 58,807 vots to Vallas' 134,844. In second was Teachers' Union-backed Brandon Johnson.

Lightfoot and other Democrats tried to paint Vallas, who is also a Democrat, as "Republican" due to his tough on crime stance.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
