Dr. Anthony Fauci was awarded a $1 million prize on Monday for "speaking truth to power."

According to NPR, Dr. Fauci was awarded the Dan David Prize, chosen by the University of Tel Aviv, along with six other top health professionals, who split a separate $1 million prize.

"Dr. Fauci is the most influential public health leader in the U.S. and is widely respected throughout the world for his efforts against the coronavirus," a statement from the university reads.

"As NIAID director he has led research efforts on the development of diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines for Covid-19. He is the voice of reason for randomized, controlled trials for evaluating antiviral drugs and other therapeutics. These efforts have led to useful therapeutics that have markedly reduced death rates for hospitalized Covid-19 patients."

Of the $1 million awarded, 10 percent is set aside to academic scholarships of Fauci's choice.

Other previous years' prize winners include Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and former Vice President Al Gore.
