Houston, Texas, police say that George Floyd’s four-year-old niece was shot and wounded while she was asleep in bed on New Year's Day.

Houston's ABC 13 reports that Floyd's niece, Arianna, who was "front and center at the marches and rallies in her Uncle George Floyd's case" was the victim of a shooting when someone fired several shots at their apartment.

Arianna, who was struck in her torso, was rushed to hospital where she was assessed to have suffered a punctured lung and three broken ribs.

Houston police announced the details of the shooting on Tuesday afternoon, days after Arianna underwent surgery on Saturday. Her father says that she was asleep in bed when the shooting occurred.

The police department said that a suspect or suspects fired several shots into the apartment where four adults and two children were present. Arianna, who was identified by the news station, was taken by private vehicle to a nearby hospital where she was stabilized and currently remains in hospital.

Police did not disclose a description of the shooter or provide a motive, but family members say that they believe the shooting was a coincidence.

Houston police are calling on the public to provide information on the case as they continue to investigate the shooting. Anyone with information is urged to contact HPD Major Assaults and Family Violence Division at 713-308-8800 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).

Arianna's uncle, George Floyd, who previously lived in Houston, became the subject of national outrage after he died while in custody of Minneapolis police. His death was ruled a murder, with former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin receiving a sentence of 22 years in prison. Chauvin's legal team announced plans to appeal the ruling in September.

"Chauvin plans to raise 14 separate issues, including Judge Peter Cahill's decision to deny Chauvin's request to move the trial out of Hennepin County, which includes Minneapolis, because of the intense pretrial publicity," Reuters reported at the time.
