“The congressman is reserving his seats on his assigned committees until he has been properly cleared of both campaign and personal financial investigations,” said his spokeswoman, Naysa Woomer, according to CNBC.
Santos told his party during the meeting that “he’s not accepting the committee assignments until things get cleared up,” one GOP lawmaker who was in the room said, on the basis of anonymity.
It is not known if Santos made the decision on how own or if he was directed to revoke his committee assignments by others. Santos and House Majority leader Kevin McCarthy held a private meeting on Monday, though it is not known what the two spoke about. Spokesmen for McCarthy did not respond to a request for comment from CNBC.
Santos is being investigated by prosecutors over his personal campaign finances, as well as lies about his family's background.
