Canadian Green Party Leader Annamie Paul has announced that her party is now officially calling for the relocation of the 2022 Olympic games, set to be held in Beijing, China.
"@CanadianGreens are calling for the 2022 Olympics to be relocated from Beijing due to ongoing genocide against Uighurs. Canada should consider whether it is feasible to offer itself as an alternative host, given our experience and venues," wrote Paul.
China is currently committing a genocide against the Uyghur population in East Turkestan, a region of northwestern China.
An estimated two million Uyghurs have been relocated into concentration camps, where they are subject to torture, sexual abuse, forced sterilization, and slave labour, often for the benefit of western companies operating in China.
The genocide is part of an attempt by the Chinese government to destroy Uyghur culture and create a culturally Han society, Han being the dominant ethnic group of China.
On Monday, a group of MPs called for the relocation of the 2022 games, again citing human rights concerns.
Notable signees include Bloc Québécois MP Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe, Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Conservative MP Kelly Block, NDP MP Jenny Kwan, and Green MP Elizabeth May.
