Health Canada has announced that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has been given the go-ahead for use in Canada.
Canada is now the first country to have approved four vaccines, said Dr. Supriya Sharma of Health Canada.
Unlike the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is not an mRNA vaccine, and instead opts for the vaccination method that has been used for years.
The shot is also a single dose vaccine, meaning a follow-up jab will not be required.
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is also 85 percent effective at preventing COVID-19 symptoms up to 28 days after vaccination, clinical trials show.
Ten million doses of the vaccine have been ordered, with 28 million more able to be purchased. It is not known when it is expected to arrive to Canadian shores, though the initial 10 million purchased are expected by September.
