Health Canada has approved the Pfizer and BioNTech COVID vaccine on Wednesday, following a two-month review of trial data.
Health Canada now says that the vaccine is both safe to use, and that the "data provided supports favourable efficacy."
"The efficacy of the vaccine was established to be approximately 95 per cent. The vaccine was well tolerated by participants and has no important safety concerns. The benefit-to-risk assessment for Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is considered favourable," said a statement from Health Canada, according to CBC.
According to The Canadian Press, Canada is "set to receive 4 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine by March, including up to 249,000 doses this month."
Twenty million doses of the vaccine have been purchased—enough to vaccinate ten million people. Canada also has the option to buy 56 million more doses, which is enough to vaccinate a majority of Canada's population.
