Georgia's secretary of state has announced that the contest for the state's US Senate seat is heading to a runoff election next month.

In the fight for the Senate seat, neither Democratic incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock nor Republican candidate Herschel Walker received more than 50 percent of the vote in Tuesday's midterm election, reported ABC News.

As of Wednesday morning, the two were tied at 49 points with 96 percent of the votes reported.

"There is one race in our state that is going to be moving to the December 6 runoff," Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said in an announcement around 2 pm.

"That is the race for the United States Senate, between Senator Raphael Warnock, and Herschel Walker. Our office has already begun the behind-the-scenes work to start building the ballots, so ballots are being built as we speak," he said.

The runoff to break the tie will take place on December 6. The winner has a high probability of determining which party will control the Senate.
