Republican New York State Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay announced in a press conference on Monday that he will be introducing a resolution to impeach Governor Andrew Cuomo, Local SYR reports.
Cuomo, once considered a superstar by Democrats, has been plagued by scandals in recent weeks.
The scandals began after it was revealed that his government suppressed information regarding the number of coronavirus deaths in nursing homes over the course of the pandemic, with estimates suggesting that they were undercounted by as much as 50 percent.
According to a former Cuomo aide, the state lied about the number of deaths because they believed that revealing the true numbers would help former President Donald Trump win reelection in 2020. Republicans had criticized the Democratic Party for their response to coronavirus throughout the campaign, with much attention being given to Cuomo's decision to force elderly coronavirus patients to remain in nursing homes.
GOP politicians and conservative commentators have argued that the decision led to a much higher death toll than there otherwise would have been.
The scandal was compounded by recent sexual harassment allegations which have been leveled against Cuomo. Five women, many of whom were former aides of Cuomo, have thus far come forward to accuse the Governor of sexual harassment.
The revelations surrounding Cuomo's behaviour have fueled bipartisan calls for his resignation, a call which Cuomo has rejected.
Refusing to vacate his position, Cuomo will now be facing the possibility of impeachment.
If Cuomo is impeached, he will likely be replaced by Democratic New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul.
