During an announcement earlier today, former justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould and announced that she will be running as an independent MP for the October federal election.

She was later joined by her colleague and former Liberal MP Jane Philpott in announcing an independent bid for parliament.

Earlier this year, Wilson-Raybould was kicked out of the Liberal caucus after she came out as the source behind allegations of political interference in the SNC-Lavalin affair.

Her campaign website was recently updated clearly indicating that she will be an independent candidate. A section on her reasoning behind the decision includes Wilson-Raybould's announcement.

"It has also become very apparent to me and to many other Canadians that there can be, and must be, a different way of doing politics that reflects where our country needs to go and does not regress," reads the statement.

Wilson-Raybould made the announcement while in her home riding of Vancouver-Granville.

Philpott made her announcement only 30 minutes after her colleague. She will be running as the independent candidate for  Markham—Stouffville.

“Who better to build political will than independents who aren’t afraid of anybody?" said Philpott.

This is a breaking news story and it will be updated as more information surfaces.
