Republican lawmakers in Kentucky have enacted a sweeping ban on sex changes for minors by overriding the veto of the Democratic governor.

The new law prohibits doctors from providing hormone therapy or other gender-affirming treatments to anyone under the age of 18.

The legislation was passed by the Republican-controlled legislature last month. Governor Andy Beshear had vetoed the bill, calling it an attack on the transgender community. However, on Monday, the GOP lawmakers voted to override the veto, making Kentucky the first state to enact such a law.

In a statement to reporters after vetoing the sweeping bill, Beshear said that he believes parents should have the right to make important medical decisions for their children, rather than having those decisions dictated by the government. The governor added that he thinks most Kentuckians share his belief.

"At the end of the day, this is about my belief — and, I think, the belief of the majority of Kentuckians — that parents should get to make important medical decisions about their children, not big government," he said, according to The Associated Press
