A prominent LGBT activist has claimed that Ron MacLean apologized after a "homophobic" joke he made during last night's Leafs-Canadiens broadcast went viral across social media.
According to CBC Sports, the vice-chair of You Can Play, David Palumbo, said that MacLean took ownership of what he said, and was "apologetic."
MacLean has not yet made a public comment despite increasing calls for his resignation.
Many on social media called for MacLean's firing last night:
The comment in question was made while MacLean was addressing analyst Kevin Bieksa. MacLean said, "You have a photo of a man with his tarp off, you're definitely positive for something."
MacLean's statement was likely implying that Bieska is gay, and that since he is gay, he has HIV or AIDS.
MacLean was largely silent when his longtime broadcasting partner Don Cherry was cancelled and mobbed out of his job on Remembrance Day 2019 for saying that recent immigrants to Canada should honour those who fought for our freedom and way of life they came here to enjoy.
