House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's plane landed in Taiwan on Tuesday morning, in what is being described a visit from the highest-ranking US official in 25 years. Pelosi made her way to Taiwan as the Chinese People's Liberation Army determined to conduct air drills over Taiwan this week.
Officials in both Russia and China have urged Pelosi not to make the trip. Her trip has been widely criticized, as it seems to many to be relatively pointless. Tucker Carlson alleged that it was "one of the weirdest moments in the weirdest presidency in American history," while Human Event Daily's Jack Posobiec said the trip might be predicated upon her investment in the Taiwanese tech industry.
Pelosi gave a statement on the Congressional Delegation's visit to Taiwan, saying that the visit "honors America's unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan's vibrant Democracy." The statement notes that this is the first official visit to Taiwan by a Speaker of the US House in 25 years.
China blasted the visit as a "severe violation" of its national sovereignty.
Pelosi's remarks continue, saying that the visit is "focused on mutual security." This despite threats from China, echoed in CCP stat media, that Pelosi's visit would be seen as a breach of diplomacy.
"Our visit is part of our broader trip to the Indo-Pacific — including Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan — focused on mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance. Our discussions with Taiwan leadership will focus on reaffirming our support for our partner and on promoting our shared interests, including advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific region. America’s solidarity with the 23 million people of Taiwan is more important today than ever, as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy," the statement read.
"Our visit is one of several Congressional delegations to Taiwan – and it in no way contradicts longstanding United States policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, U.S.-China Joint Communiques and the Six Assurances. The United States continues to oppose unilateral efforts to change the status quo."
It was only two days ago that Pelosi seemed to drop Taiwan from her official itinerary. When asked about Pelosi's plans, the White House has repeatedly said that Pelosi makes her own travel decisions.
The Pentagon had downplayed concerns of Pelosi's trip, though China said that any visit by Pelosi to Taiwan would be seen as "support" of "Taiwan independence" from Chinese officials, and that Beijing would not "turn a blind eye" to it.
On Monday, National Security spokesperson John Kirby said unequivocally that the US does not support Taiwanese independence. In May, Biden said the US would "militarily defend" Taiwan against aggression.
In response to Pelosi' visit to the island, Beijing officials have reportedly said that it is "by no means an unofficial action," according to TRT World Now on Twitter. Chinese officials have also stated that they will never allow room for Taiwanese independence from China "in whatever form."
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
