New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs has called for an early election come September 14.

The Progressive Conservative Premier won a minority seat in the provincial legislature in 2018. With a victory, Higgs would become the first New Brunswick premier to win re-election since Bernard Lord in 2003.

Higgs has the highest approval rating among Canadian premiers as of May 2020, polling at 80 percent.

The call for an election comes just three days after the official opposition Liberals pulled out of negotiations that would have kept the Higgs Conservatives in power until October 2022.
