New York GOP leaders on Wednesday called for the resignation of Congressman George Santos, who is being investigated by prosecutors over his personal campaign finances, as well as lies about his family's background.

"His lies were not mere fibs. He disgraced the House of Representatives," Joseph Cairo Jr., chair of the Nassau County Republican Committee, said at a news conference, reports the Associated Press. "He’s not welcome here at Republican headquarters."

Santos was sworn into the US House last week, and the local GOP party has no pathway to remove Santos from office.

The announcement comes after two New York Democrats asked the House Ethics Committee to investigate Santos. "Reps. Ritchie Torres and Dan Goldman, in a letter to the committee, said Santos also failed to file 'timely, accurate and complete' financial disclosure reports and the reports he did file are 'sparse and perplexing,'" reports AP.

Last week the Campaign Legal Center complained to the FEC that Santos should be investigated due to the "mountain of lies" that Santos made during the campaign. The lies about his life story and qualifications, they say, should prompt the commission to "thoroughly investigate what appear to be equally brazen lies about how his campaign raised and spent money."

Santos, who is gay and flipped the Long Island House seat that was held by Democrats for a decade, may have lied about his family having Jewish ancestry while on the campaign trail.
