The officer who shot Daunte Wright in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center, Minn., was arrested on Wednesday and charged in his death. The officer was a 26-year veteran of the force, and during a traffic stop with Wright, she said she mistook her handgun for a taser and shot him. Wright was 20 years old.

Kim Potter is expected to be charged with manslaughter, a source told The Daily Beast, and she will be booked in the Hennepin County Jail "on probable cause of second-degree manslaughter." She was arrested at 11:30 am on Wednesday, according the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

"This remains an active and ongoing investigation. The BCA has been and will continue to work with the Washington County Attorney’s Office as the case progresses," the Minnesota BCA said.

When Potter announced her resignation, she said "I have loved every minute of being a police officer and serving this community to the best of my ability, but I believe it is the best interest of the community, the department, and my fellow officers if I resign immediately."

Charges will be announced on Wednesday. Prior to her arrest, police erected concrete barriers around the Potter home after threats of violence were made against her, Daily Wire reports.

Police were previously stationed to guard Potter's home in Champlin, Minn. as rioting and looting broke out in nearby Brooklyn Center, the Minneapolis suburb where the shooting took place.

Potter's address was leaked online on Tuesday afternoon, leaving many of Potter's neighbours in distress.

"We're stressed, we're nervous. I've been told some of the neighbors have left," one neighbour said. "It was a horrible situation. We also feel bad for Mr. Wright's family."

Potter, along with other police officers, pulled Wright over an expired vehicle registration tag. Police attempted to arrest Wright after they discovered that there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest on weapons-related charges. While Wright resisted arrest, Potter attempted to subdue Wright with a taser, but pulled out a gun and shot him instead.

The police claim that Potter accidentally mistook her gun for her taser, although many have questioned how a veteran officer such as Potter could have made such a catastrophic mistake, with some questioning whether it was a mistake at all.

Rioting broke out the evening after the incident took place, with rioters looting various stores and shops in Brooklyn Center. The city declared an 8:00 pm curfew in an attempt to quell the unrest.

It is the second string of riots to overtake the Minneapolis metropolitan area in the past year, with the area being the epicenter of the riots which broke out following the death of George Floyd while he was being detained by a Minneapolis police officer last year.
