The Ford government announced today that Ontario would be pausing its use of the AstraZeneca vaccine for safety and supply reasons.

The announcement came on Tuesday during a 4 pm press conference with the province's chief medical officer of health, Dr. David Williams.

Williams said that the vaccine's link to a rare and potentially fatal blood clotting disorder, called vaccine-induced immune thrombotic-thrombocytopenia (VITT.)

12 cases of VITT have been confirmed throughout Canada, with three having died.

Over two million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine have been given across Canada.

The announcement comes on the same day that Alberta announced similar new measures around the vaccine.

AstraZeneca will no longer be given as a first dose, and will only be given to those who require a second dose of the vaccine.
