The Ontario government has released their new projections and figures regarding the coronavirus, specifically regarding hospital and ICU capacity.

According to the government's figures, COVID-19 "appears to have peaked," despite initial reports saying that the peak would take place some time in May.

As a standard, the government used South Korea as a model of the best-case scenario, and Italy as the "worst case scenario."

In terms of hospital demand, Ontario predicts that they are "tracking towards" South Korea, rather than Italy.

Ontario says they are expecting 20,000 cases in this wave of the pandemic, aligning it with the "best case" that was previously set.

"We're now looking at a much lower number, hopefully under 20,000 cases, in this wave of the pandemic," said public health dean Prof. Steini Brown.

According to figures from the Ontario government, ICU capacity has fared better than what was previously expected.

Ontario believes that cases in long term care homes will make a number of deaths difficult to project, with long term care homes still being on the rise.
