Conservative Party Leader Erin O'Toole on Tuesday morning called for Canada to pressure the International Olympic Committee to move the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
"We've become a nation of silence, not one of principled action," said O'Toole. "Genocide is taking place in China right now."
"Approximately one million Uyghurs have been forcibly relocated into detention centres for re-education in Xianjing. People who have managed to escape have reported horrific coordinated violence using physical, mental, and sexual torture," said O'Toole.
Thirteen Canadian Members of Parliament from across party lines have authored a letter urging the Liberal government to act so that the Chinese regime is not allowed another opportunity for positive press coverage and legitimacy while engaging in an ongoing, largely successful genocide.
Canadian Green Party Leader Annamie Paul also announced last week that her party would be officially calling for the relocation of the 2022 Olympic games, set to be held in Beijing, China.
Advocates for boycotting these winter Olympics have started to draw startling comparisons between the 2022 games, and those held in Berlin in 1936.
"The time has come for Canada to call on the International Olympic Committee to relocate the 2022 Winter Olympics out of China," said O'Toole. "Canada must take a stand and show leadership, but we do not need to do this alone."
O'Toole said that work should be done with Canada's allies to coordinate an effort to relocate the games for 2022.
"In doing so, remind our allies of the important role Canada has played and must continue to play in taking an early stand for human rights and dignity."
O'Toole called on Prime Minister Trudeau to actively relocate the Olympic games.
