Conservative Party Leader Erin O'Toole's office released a statement following the Trudeau Liberals' announcement that they would move forward with a vaccine mandate for Canada's public employees.
Additionally, the Trudeau government announced that interprovincial air travel and trains would no longer be available to those who are not vaccinated.
"Vaccines are the most important tool in the fight against COVID-19," the statement reads. "We encourage every Canadian who is able to get one. Conservatives support Canadians' right to determine their own health choices. We are in a crisis and Canadians expect reasonable measures, such as rapid testing for those who are not vaccinated, to protect Canadians, especially the most vulnerable."
No date for the mandate has been announced as of yet, though Minister Dominic LeBlanc hinted that it would be implemented quickly.
"This is an evolution of the government's posture in protecting the health and safety of Canadians since the beginning of the pandemic," said LeBlanc during Friday's press conference. "We have scientific data but also real-world evidence on how effective are the vaccines that have been approved for use by Health Canada."
