Mike Pence has been subpoenad by the special counsel appointed by Biden's Department of Justice to oversee the investigation into former President Donald Trump. Pence recently self-reported that he found classified documents among his possession.

The subpoena from special counsel Jack Smith has not been made public, so what is being sought with that legal measure is not clear, but "it follows months of negotiations between federal prosecutors and Pence's legal team," reports ABC News, per a source.

Smith, who was appointed in November, is assigned to look into Trump's handling of classified documents that he allegedly took with him to his Mar-a-Lago home after leaving the White House in Janaury 2021.

President Joe Biden also is accused of absconding with classified documents from his time as Vice President and Senator, some of which were found in his home in Delaware, and some of which were found in his offices at the Biden Center, which is funded in large part by foreign interests in China, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Smith's subpoena is an escalation in the Biden administration's ongoing efforts to make a case against Trump. Trump's home was raided by the FBI in August, and federal agents made off with boxes upon boxes of alleged documents, including magazine articles and media clippings along with empty folders.

Neither Pence nor the special counsel responded to ABC's request for comment.
