Pope Francis endorsed same-sex civil unions for the first time since taking on the role of Pope.
The statement came during an interview for a feature-length documentary that premiered at the Rome Film Festival, which took place on Wednesday.
"Homosexual people have a right to be in a family. They are children of God and have a right to a family," the Pope said in the documentary.
Francis had previously endorsed civil unions for gay couples while serving as archbishop of Buenos Aires.
