Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford spoke to media at a joint press conference in Gogama, Ontario, where the pair took part in the ground-breaking ceremony for a nearby mining project.
Yesterday, the WE Charity announced they would be closing their operations in Canada due to the pandemic and the political fallout that came with the announcement of a $912 million grant from the Trudeau government.
When asked whether or not Trudeau took any responsibility for WE closing, Trudeau said:
"We moved very quickly to try and support young people with a range of different measures. What we tried to do with the Canada Student grant was encourage young people to volunteer in communities across this country, as they were, and give them recognition for that. In order to do that, we moved rapidly with a partner that we felt was able to actually deliver it ... The way it ended up working out was really unfortunate for everyone involved."
Trudeau emphasized his regret for not recusing himself from the start, due to the "perception involved."
"There was no conflict of interest here, and as a government we will continue to work extremely hard to support our young people through this pandemic."
