Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair announced via social media on Friday that border closures for non-essential international travel with the US will be extended once again.

The closure will now last until at least July 21.

The Canada-US border has been closed since March 2020 for all travel deemed non-essential.

According to Reuters, Blair said the ban on non-essential travel may be relaxed for fully vaccinated Canadians. More information is expected on Monday.

Recently, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had hinted that the border would "likely" reopen in stages, with travellers entering Canada needing to be fully vaccinated.

Trudeau stated that while many are eager to see the border reopen, any easing of restrictions needs to be done with the safety and well-being of Canadians in mind.

"We're on the right path, but we'll make our decisions based on the interests of Canadians and not based on what other countries want," Trudeau said of lessening travel restrictions via news conference in Ottawa.
