Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that Canada will receive millions of doses of Pfizer's pediatric vaccine for children, upon approval by Health Canada that the jab is safe for use in those between the ages of 5 and 11.
"We've heard that Pfizer has now submitted, for regulatory approval at Health Canada, a pediatric vaccine for kids 5 to 11. This is great news," assured Trudeau.
"Health Canada is going to be examining attentively that submission, and even though I know parents are all going to be eager to get their kid vaccinated as quickly and as soon as possible, I want people to be patient, because Health Canada is going to be taking the time necessary to ensure that like all vaccines approved for use in Canada, vaccines approved for kids 5 to 11 will be fully safe and effective."
A survey released by the Angus Reid Institute on Monday revealed that 23 percent of Canadians will not vaccinate their children under 12 years old.
Another half of Canadian parents would immediately vaccinate their young children as soon as they have the chance, saying "Yes, I will get my child(ren) vaccination as soon as one became available to them".
A further 18 percent replied positively to "Yes, I will eventually [get] my child(ren) vaccinated, but would wait a while first," and the remaining nine percent responded "not sure."
Trudeau continued: "It's extremely important that they go through all the full processes necessary so that every parent can have confidence when these vaccines do get approved, that they will be safe for their children, to keep us all safe," Trudeau continued.
Trudeau would go on to announce that Canada reached a deal by working with Pfizer, so that after Health Canada's approval, Canada will receive "millions of doses... Enough to get all kids between 5 and 11 vaccinated, as quickly as possible.
Trudeau is now the latest world leader to appeal to parents to get their children vaccinated. Last week, US President Joe urged Americans to get their children vaccinated.
"We've been encouraging schools to implement important health measures by masking, testing, and getting everyone vaccinated who is eligible to be vaccinated," he said.
