Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed media after his government's cabinet retreat, where he said again today that he did not want an election, noting that he also believes Canadians do not want an election.

"I do not want an election. I do not think Canadians want an election. I think Canadians want politicians to work together, to serve them and build a better future. To keep them safe during this COVID crisis," said Trudeau.

Trudeau said he believes it would be "irresponsible to say that an election would be irresponsible."

"Our country and our institutions are stronger than that and if there has to be an election, we'll figure it out," the prime minister said.

Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault shared a similar opinion, telling Global News that he believes "the last thing people want at this point is an election."

Trudeau has been consistent in saying that his government had "no interest" in seeing an election this fall, saying so much last week on September 9.

"The government has no interest in seeing an election this fall. We know that there's still an awful lot of hardship that Canadians are going through, and there are real concerns of a second wave," Trudeau previously said. "We have no interest in an election."

Canadians comfortable with a pandemic election

Elections Canada has said that they are preparing for the possibility of a pandemic election, especially if one were to come as early as the fall.

According to a poll conducted by the Angus Reid Institute, 43 percent of Canadians would be "completely comfortable" in casting a vote in person, with thirty percent saying they would be "more comfortable than uncomfortable."

Just seven percent of respondents said they were "completely uncomfortable." 20 percent said they were "more uncomfortable than comfortable."
