Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that his government would continue to advocate for Canada's interests effectively with the new American administration—this despite the elimination of 60,000 potential Canadian jobs revoked by Biden's signing of an executive order on the Keystone XL pipeline.
Trudeau said that his government's track record with previous administrations shows a history of fighting for Canadian interests.
"Over the past four years, we faced an American administration that was both unpredictable and extremely protectionistic. We were able, every step of the way, to stand up for Canadian interests. Whether it was renegotiating NAFTA in a way that protected our auto sector, kept supply management that President Trump wanted to dismantle, that ensured our cultural exemptions, our intellectual property rights," Trudeau said on Tuesday.
"We were able to stand up for Canadians, we were able to defend our steel and aluminum workers, we were able to continue to demonstrate how important it is to keep essential supply lines going, even during a pandemic when the temptation was to completely shut down the borders. We were there to be able to advocate for Canada's interests, and we will continue to be effective in advocating for Canada's interests with this new administration."
Trudeau alluded to this administration being easier to work with than that of Trump's pointing to similar values such as the fight against climate change.
"Obviously, president Biden has a lot of similar priorities to this government, to Canadians, whether it's fighting climate change, whether it's building back better and building good jobs for everyone. These are things that we'll be able to work on with our nearest ally and closest friend," Trudeau concluded.
