Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the Climate Adaptation Summit on Monday, an event hosted by the government of the Netherlands.

According to the United Nations' website, the event aims to "build on the advances of the UN Climate Action Summit by showcasing pioneering solutions to the climate emergency."

"As the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, the CAS will deliver action and inspire change to help societies build back better. It will aim to help realize the transitions required for a climate-resilient world," the Summit says.

Trudeau's message appeared modeled on the goals set out by the event, touching mainly on the "health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Job one is to do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes to protect people and economies from this virus. As we work to keep people safe today, we must also plan for the recovery of tomorrow. And that must include an ambitious plan to take strong action to fight and build resilience against climate change," said Trudeau.

Trudeau's message also targeted younger generations. "They know that we have to protect natural and animal spaces, realign the natural balance, and preserve our planet for future generations. They count on us to act now for their future. That's why Canada has outlined a strong climate plan that will adapt to the impacts of climate change, create jobs, and build a cleaner and more competitive country for everyone."

"...To continue to take on this challenge, we need the voices of young people. That's why Canada supported the Young Leader program for the global commission, and why we welcome the launch of a new young leadership program, to bring together the next generation of leaders to help tackle climate change... We will build a cleaner, safer, and more competitive world."

Recent comments from Trudeau show a clear focal shift back onto climate change. When President Joe Biden decided to revoke a permit moving forward the Keystone XL Pipeline project, Trudeau said he was "looking forward to working with President Biden to reduce pollution, combat climate change, fight COVID-19, create middle class jobs, and build back better by supporting a sustainable economic recovery for everyone."
