President Donald Trump issued a statement on Wednesday calling for a peaceful transition of power and condemning violence.

"In light of reports of more demonstrations, I urge that there must be NO violence, NO lawbreaking and NO vandalism of any kind," Trump said. "That is not what I stand for and it is not what America stands for. I call on ALL Americans to help ease tensions and calm tempers. Thank You."

According to a White House advisor, Trump plans to issue a longer statement through the White House press office where he will be "asking all Americans to join with him in ensuring that there is an orderly and peaceful transition next week," and will also be "asking that Big Tech companies join with him in this effort."

"This is a critical time in our nation’s history and surely we can all come together to deliver this important message and not continue to play partisan politics," the advisor said.

The call for peace comes a week after pro-Trump rioters stormed the US Capitol Building, resulting in multiple fatalities, in protest of the certification of the election results by a then-ongoing joint session of Congress. Lawmakers were forced to flee the scene as rioters breached the building, but returned later that evening to confirm the election victory for President-elect Joe Biden.

Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States on Jan 20.
