Candidate Joe Kent has has won in Washington's third congressional district, after cruising past Jaime Herrera Beutler, who voted for then-President Donald Trump's impeachment.
Hererra Beutler conceded in a statement on Tuesday night, saying "I'm proud I always told the truth, stuck to my principles, and did what I knew to be best for our country." Kent challenged the incumbent Herrera Beutler after she voted to impeach then-President Donald Trump.
Kent took a narrow lead over Herrera Beutler on Monday.
Washington State's primary system makes it so that all candidates run on the same ballot, with the top two candidates advancing to the November election, no matter the party.
The two were dueling over the state's second spot. Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez has already advanced to the November ballot. According to USA Today:
"Herrera Beutler, who had about 24% on election night, dropped to just over 22% by Monday, and was trailing Kent – a former Green Beret endorsed by Trump who surged in late returns and had nearly 23% of the vote – by 960 votes."
Herrera Beutler had served Washington state in Congress for six terms before being ousted by Kent.
