Former President and 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump is reportedly set to travel to East Palestine next week, the town in which a train carrying hazardous materials derailed earlier this month, and its chemicals burned off to avoid an explosion.

A source familiar with Trump’s plans told Fox News that the former president plans to travel to the Ohio town on Wednesday, and will meet with members of the community.

The visit comes after the derailment of a Norfolk Southern train earlier this month, which was carrying hazardous materials like vinyl chloride, a chemical used to make PVC plastics. As a result of the derailment, the chemical began to leak from the tanker cars, and it was decided a controlled burn of the chemicals was the best course of action to prevent an explosion.

It was later revealed that Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed off on the controlled release, which saw a dark plume of smoke billow over the town and neighboring communities.

Despite officials stating that residents were safe to return, people expressed concerns over dead animals and fish appearing in the area, as well as a chemical smell in the air. On Friday, DeWine confirmed that a portion of the Sulphur Run was "severely contaminated," as videos appeared of a rainbow sheen on the water, including a video posted to Twitter by Ohio Sen. JD Vance.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
