Olympic medalist and California gubernatorial candidate Caitlyn Jenner, who competed at the top levels of athletic competition as a male, responded to an attack article by LGBT outlet Pink News, who said that Jenner launched "another disgraceful attack" on trans athlete Lia Thomas.
Thomas is a biological male who identifies as a woman and competes in women's swimming, where Thomas dominates over the women who try to compete in that category. Thomas won an NCAA Division I championship on Thursday.
The Pink News article quotes from Daily Mail, and points out that Jenner competed in a women’s golf tournament. The article goes into Jenner's statements that trans women and girls "should not play for women’s teams, and asserted that she believes in strict binary sex."
"I don’t think biological boys should compete in women’s sports – we have to protect women’s sports… that’s the bottom line," Jenner said.
"I don’t see how you can be happy beating other girls under these circumstances. You have to have a sense of personal responsibility. You can still enjoy sports but not play at a competitive level, right?"
In response to the article, Jenner said that the comments were not an attack on Thomas, but that it was means to stand up for women and girls. "I just had the balls to stand up for women and girls in sports," Jenner said.
The article's author responded to Jenner noting that "I don't think [Jenner] liked it."
In response, Jenner said: "you are the definition of fake news and have no integrity. I competed in a charity pro-am tournament hosted by the LPGA, the ANA, with men and women. With Danielle Kang, Austin Ernst, Ken Romaniszyn, Bart Kendall and George Van Scott. Do your research before you publish lies."
In a follow up tweet, Jenner said that the outlet has "no integrity whatsoever."
"First you lie, then you delete your tweet, and remove her name as the author of the article! Wow! Incredible! @benjamincohen have some accountability." Cohen is the CEO of Pink News.
Thomas became became the biological male who identifies as a woman to win an NCAA Division One championship in any sport. This "means the world" to Thomas, Thomas said after the win.
