The city of Calgary has laid off approximately 1,200 employees due to the economic halt caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic has led to the shut down of Calgary's recreation facilities for at least two weeks according to CTV News.

The province had a total of 690 recorded cases of COVID-19 as of Monday.

These employees account for less than 10 per cent of city staff and the layoffs are only temporary assured Calgary Mayor, Naheed Nenshi on Monday.

The city said that the employees laid off will remain on-call, as part-time or temporary workers in the recreation or Calgary Neighbourhoods business units.

According to city manager, David Duckworth, while laid-off, the 1,200 employees can apply for the provincial and federal supports that have been put in place for the coronavirus pandemic.

"I look forward to the time when we are able to reopen our facilities and restore impacted services, so we can bring our valued employees back to work," said Duckworth.
