Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced at a Wednesday press conference that the travel ban on the UK will be extended until Jan 6 in response to the new variant of coronavirus discovered in the country.

"Our government temporarily suspended all commercial and private passenger flights from the UK to Canada," Trudeau told reporters. "Today, I can announce that we will extend this temporary suspension of passenger flights from the UK to Canada for another two weeks, until January sixth, so we can prevent this new variant of COVID-19 from spreading in Canada."

While the new variant of coronavirus appears to be more infectious, it does not appear to be more deadly and the evidence does not suggest that it would be more resistant to the vaccine currently being distributed around the world.
