Canada must stop depending on China, our enemy

Canada, and much of the world is undergoing an unprecedented moment in history.

We have a health crisis, financial crisis, economic crisis, and supply chain crisis happening simultaneously.

We are shutting down a huge portion of our economy, telling people to stay home, and taking desperate measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus, in an attempt to stop our healthcare system from being overwhelmed and collapsing.

We are also witnessing shortages of items that would have once seemed mundane, yet are now essential, like toilet paper and cleaning products.

Amid all of this chaos and life-changing events, we are realizing how dependent our nation is on foreign countries—particularly China—for many of the products we take for granted.

For example, many of our pharmaceutical drugs and medical equipment is manufactured in a supply chain that includes production in China.

Our electronics are heavily manufactured in China—and there is even the possibility that our core 5G infrastructure would be controlled by the Communist State—if Huawei isn’t banned.

What we are seeing is that Canada has been made dependent and vulnerable by being unable to make essential things here in our own country.

We are heavily dependent on a hostile foreign nation for things we desperately need.

That may have been an economic problem in the past.

Now, it’s clearly both a national security and economic problem.

China lied for months about the coronavirus, jailing its own doctors and covering up the spread of the coronavirus. At the same time, they encouraged flights to continue, spreading the virus from China to countries around the world, including Canada.

We are paying a massive price, both in lives and in unprecedented economic destruction.

This cannot go unanswered.

We cannot continue to be dependent on China, a nation led by a government that is clearly our enemy.

As we address the health crisis and economic crisis, we must begin to refocus our economy towards domestic manufacturing and production.

We must impose immense tariffs on products from China.

We must make it illegal for Chinese companies to take any stake in Canadian companies.

We must remove all researchers in Canada who are citizens of the Communist State.

We must ban Canadian companies from locating their supply chains in China.

We must provide direct government support and incentives to rebuild Canadian manufacturing, even if it costs many billions of dollars.

We must remove links between our two countries, including the imposition of a massive foreign homebuyers tax, and a huge reduction in the number of foreign students from China that are allowed into our country.

Now, while all of this is done, we must also be clear that this is not about hatred towards the Chinese People. The Chinese people are the first victims of the Chinese Communist Party, who show no regard for their people.

If China was led by a democratic government as we see in Taiwan, then this wouldn’t be a problem.

But that’s not the case.

So long as China is led by the ruthless Chinese Communist Party, we simply cannot trust China.

We must retake our own national security, we must retake our own economic strength.

Canadians are realizing that we must be more self-sufficient as a nation, and that means we must bring our supply chains back home and end our dependence on China once and for all.
