Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday that the federal government has secured an additional 125 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine, including booster shots, through to the year 2024, CTV News reports.

According to the Prime Minister, Canada will be receiving 35 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine in 2022, 30 million in 2023, and 60 million in 2024.

"Pfizer has been a solid partner for Canada in this fight against COVID-19 and we are happy to be one of the first countries to secure an agreement with them going forward," Trudeau said in a press conference.

The news comes after the CEO of Pfizer announced that those who take their vaccine will likely need a booster shot one year after being fully vaccinated.

"A likely scenario is that there will be likely a need for a third dose, somewhere between six and 12 months and then from there, there will be an annual revaccination, but all of that needs to be confirmed. And again, the variants will play a key role," CEO Albert Bourla said.

No other vaccine producer has announced the necessity of obtaining a third shot.
