A Canadian man is one of the five people suspected of assisting an Islamic extremist attack at a Nairobi, Kenya hotel.
The attack was carried out by the Islamist-Somali extremist group al-Shabab. The attack was a coordinated effort that included several gunmen and explosions.
Kenyan authorities claim that 21 people were killed in the attack, including one police officer.
Guleid Abdihakim, a Canadian national, appeared in court with four other suspects and is being investigated for suspected terror offences.
Global Affairs Canada issued a statement on Abdihakim’s arrest claiming they are “aware of reports that a Canadian citizen has been arrested in Kenya.”
Mr. Abdihakim is one of five suspects being held for 30 days to determine their involvement in the attack. He is accused of “aiding and abetting” the attackers.
Abdihakim’s exact involvement has not been made clear yet and Canadian officials are coordinating with Kenyan authorities to ensure the trial is conducted fairly.
