Canadian Tire has announced that the store has put a stop to their medical-grade mask sales, according to CTV News.
The company has decided to donate the remaining masks to local hospitals, health-care workers and others in need says a spokesman for the company.
Many stores received criticism earlier in the week for having large amounts of PPE in stock while hospitals were in need of the equipment.
Canadian Tire announced that it has donated 160,000 masks along with 164,000 pairs of gloves and 20,000 litres of sanitizer to hospitals, community organizations and nursing homes.
The products will no longer be sold at Canadian Tire locations or on the companies website.
A $5 million response fund to aid Canadians that have been impacted by coronavirus has been launched by the company as well. Donations to the Red Cross and the United Way will be made through the fund.
Two people from Vancouver noted that they were dismayed after they saw boxes of the equipment piled up and being sold at “insane prices.”
Jennifer Lyle from SafeCareBC said, “We currently receive multiple requests on a daily basis from organizations stating that their supplies are critically low, which means that they're looking at three days or fewer of supplies.”
The nurses’ union president also said there was a serious need for equipment like masks.
