On Friday, the Physics Department at the University of Guelph began its search for a new research chair, however their help wanted ad stated clearly that not everyone was welcome to apply.
Regardless of their credentials, anyone not belonging to a member of an "equity seeking group" was told to keep scrolling.
The ad for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Experimental Physics, posted to the University Affairs job board, informs potential applicants that their immutable characteristics are paramount.
"Candidates," it states, "must be from one or more of the following equity-seeking groups to apply: women, persons with disabilities, Indigenous peoples, and racialized groups."
Upon establishing the required melanin content and genetic makeup, the department explains that candidates must also have qualifications in the realm of physics. For those in academia, a PhD and professorship is necessary, while those not in the academic sector must show that they have the ability to be appointed.
"The successful candidate will be an outstanding and innovative world-class researcher in experimental physics whose accomplishments have made a major impact in their field," the ad states. "They will also have a superior record of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows."
Additionally, applicants must "have a track record of providing opportunities for equity-deserving groups."
The department goes on to state that whoever becomes the next research chair "is expected to establish a diverse research team" and "create an inclusive environment that enables all members to reach their full research potential."
According to the ad, although the department will only accept applications from the four aforementioned groups, providing self-identification is "optional."
Along with the usual cover letter and resume, applicants are required to submit a one-page "Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion statement" which "describes the applicant's experience with attracting and mentoring a diverse group of students, trainees and research personnel, and establishing an equitable and inclusive research environment."
