Canada's troubled coronavirus vaccine rollout has left the country at the bottom of G7 nations in daily vaccinations according to data compiled from international governments and health ministries by Our World In Data.
Canada had been the lowest in terms of daily vaccinations in the middle of January, but spiked above Italy, France, and Germany in the final two weeks of the month. Once again, however, Canada has fallen behind the other countries and is now dead last in the G7.
In terms of total vaccines administered per capita, Canada still remains ahead of France, although this gap has been tightening since mid-January. France will likely surpass Canada within a few days.
Japan, which has not even begun rolling out the vaccine, is expected to begin administering it to citizens by the end of February.
The Canadian government has been widely criticized for its failure to deliver the coronavirus vaccine to its citizens. While countries like the United States and the United Kingdom have vaccinated roughly ten and 15 percent of their respective populations, Canada has vaccinated less than three percent of their citizens.
The slow vaccine rollout has been compounded by production problems at Pfizer and Moderna facilities in Europe, driving local authorities to consider restrictions on vaccine exports. Canada was expected to open its own domestic production facility for the vaccine, but it now appears that production will not begin until the end of 2021.
