Montreal Canadiens coach Claude Julien was taken to hospital Wednesday night after experiencing chest pains, General Manager Marc Bergevin said in a statement.

“He is presently there and he’s under[going] tests to determine exactly the nature of his condition,” said Bergevin. “This has nothing to do with COVID.”

Julien is not expected to coach the current playoff series between the Habs and the Philadelphia Flyers—a series that currently sits at 1-0 in favour of the Flyers.

Assistant coach Kirk Muller, will take over from where Julien left off.

“We understand that Kirk does not speak French, but there are exceptional circumstances and we are asking you for your understanding,” GM Bergevin continued.“Out of respect for Claude’s family, I will not answer any further questions about his medical condition.”

Julien, 60, was leading the Habs through their second playoff series during his tenure.
