"Transparency and vaccine safety are top priorities for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). US government agencies use multiple, complementary safety monitoring systems to help detect possible safety signals for vaccines and other medical countermeasures as early as possible and to facilitate further investigation, as appropriate. Often these safety systems detect signals that could be due to factors other than the vaccine itself," the CDC said in a statement.
They went on to say that their data on the updated Pfizer vaccine with components of both the original Covid and omicron strains met the "statistical criteria to prompt additional investigation into whether there was a safety concern for ischemic stroke in people ages 65 and older."
According to the CDC, the investigation will attempt to discover if seniors are more likely to have a stroke in the 21 days following vaccination compared with days 22-42.
According to the National Library of Medicine, ischemic strokes are "usually caused by a blood clot that blocks or plugs a blood vessel in the brain."
A Pfizer spokesperson told Fox News, "Pfizer and BioNTech have been made aware of limited reports of ischemic stroke that have been observed in the CDC Vaccine Safety DataLink (VSD) database in people 65 and older following vaccination with the Omicron BA.4/BA.5-adapted bivalent COVID-19 Vaccine by Pfizer and BioNTech."
They continued on, saying that there's "no evidence" to conclude that the vaccines cause strokes.
"Neither Pfizer and BioNTech nor the CDC or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have observed similar findings across numerous other monitoring systems in the U.S. and globally and there is no evidence to conclude that ischemic stroke is associated with the use of the companies' COVID-19 vaccines," the spokesperson said.
"Compared to published incidence rates of ischemic stroke in this older population, the companies to date have observed a lower number of reported ischemic strokes following the vaccination with the Omicron BA.4/BA.5-adapted bivalent vaccine. The CDC continues to recommend vaccination with the Pfizer-BioNTech Omicron BA.4/BA.5-adapted bivalent COVID-19 vaccine for all authorized ages and indications."
Skeptics of the Covid vaccines voiced their concerns over the investigation on social media.
"Looks like the 'conspiracy theorists' and 'anti-vaxxers' were right again," wrote conservative commentator DC Draino on Twitter.
"The CDC is now going to investigate the link between the C19 vaccine and strokes," he said. "Too little, too late!"
Dr. Simone Gold, a physician and founder of America's Frontline Doctors, wrote "The truth is coming to light."
