Woman killed by Atlanta hospital mass shooter identified as CDC worker

A mass shooting in Atlanta on Wednesday left one dead and four others injured, including workers at the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Deion Patterson, 24, allegedly opened fire in the waiting room of Northside Hospital, killing 38-year-old Amy St Pierre, a CDC employee, according to Reuters.



Patterson reportedly shot St Pierre and wounded four other women, identified as Lisa Glynn, Georgette Whitlow, Jazzmin Daniel, and Alesha Hollinger, all of whom are still in critical condition.

In a statement, a CDC spokesperson confirmed St Pierre's employment with the agency and expressed condolences for the tragic loss, stating that "our hearts are with her family, friends, and colleagues as they remember her and grieve this tragic loss."

According to the police chief, the suspect carjacked a vehicle before fleeing the scene of the shooting and officers later recovered the vehicle during the manhunt.

The Office of public affairs for the Military branch revealed that Patterson is a former member of the US Coast Guard who first entered the service in July 2018 and worked his way up to an Electrician’s Mate Second Class before being discharged from active duty in January 2023.

The public affairs office said, "The Coast Guard is aware of the tragic incident in Atlanta allegedly involving Mr. Deion Patterson. Our deepest sympathies are with the victims and their families. The Coast Guard Investigative Service is working closely with the Atlanta Police Department and local authorities in the investigation."

Patterson also has prior convictions including a violation of the Georgia Controlled Substance Act, failing to appear in court, and a probation violation which resulted in the revocation of his probation.

Patterson was arrested on Wednesday evening. Fulton County Magistrate Judge Holly Hughes denied Patterson bail and ordered him held on one count of murder and four counts of aggravated assault.
