According to WGN TV, a local Chicago TV station, a police officer took his own life at the Homan Square police station on the West Side of Chicago, where he apparently worked.
Neither the identity of the officer or the official cause of death have been confirmed as of this writing, but sources say that the officer took his own life.
Chicago has an alarmingly high rate of incidences like this one, especially in the past year’s time.
The city of Chicago has in recent years become more and more known for its increasing levels of violence, especially gang-related gun violence. This is despite (or because of) having some of the strictest firearm laws in the country. The mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, blames the problem on other states.
This year, the violence has been worse than ever, and seems to be escalating week by week. Many feel this has put undue pressure on CPD officers, which in turn has led to the skyrocketing suicide rate among them.
This is a breaking story and will be updated as further information is available.
