China has accused the Five Eyes, an intelligence-sharing alliance between Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, of being an "axis of white supremacy."
"They have formed a US-centred, racist, and mafia-styled community, wilfully [sic] and arrogantly provoking China and trying to consolidate their hegemony as all gangsters do," reads an editorial piece in the Global Times, a Chinese state-run news outlet.
"They are becoming a racist axis aimed at stifling the development rights of 1.4 billion Chinese."
The article comes in response to Canada's successful motion in parliament to recognize the actions of the Chinese government against their ethnic Uyghur minority as a genocide. While the motion received support from all parties in Parliament, the cabinet of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau chose to abstain from the vote.
Up to two million Uyghurs have been interned in concentration camps run by the Chinese government. Testimony from survivors provides detailed accounts of the conditions in these camps, including communist indoctrination, forced labour, torture, sexual abuse of both adults and children, overcrowded prison cells, and cultural erasure.
The ultimate goal of the Chinese government is to forcefully assimilate the predominantly Muslim ethnic group into Han Chinese culture, erasing the ancient Uyghur culture and way of life. A Canadian parliamentary subcommittee report compared the Chinese government's actions to the Holocaust.
The article from the Global Times asserts that the alliance "has now become an organization targeting China and Russia. The evil idea of racism has been fermenting consciously or unconsciously in their clashes with the two countries." It is unclear how racism informs the alliance's position on Russia, which is a predominantly white country.
The article further accused the Five Eyes countries of being bastions of neo-Nazism, and asserted that US Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) himself is a neo-Nazi for calling for the genocidal Chinese government to be discarded "to the ash heap of history."
"If Tom Cotton... is not a neo-Nazi and extreme racist, then who else is in this world?" they wrote.
