Beijing has experienced an increase in new coronavirus cases after not seeing a single new case in the last 55 days. However, China as a whole experienced its largest single-day increase of the contagion in the past two months on Saturday.

Beijing reported a total of 43 new cases in the last week, and China has reported 57 new cases—the highest total of new infections since mid-April, according to Newsweek.

The South China Morning Post reported that the majority of Beijing's new cases can be blamed on the wholesale food market. A total of 27 new cases are people who held employment at Xinfadi food market, which has since been closed down.

As of Sunday, China had reported 84,288 total cases of COVID-19 and 4,638 of those resulted in death. Compared to other countries, China's numbers have remained relatively low.

China has faced substantial criticism over its handling of the virus. There is evidence that suggests that the superpower continues to censor research into the origins of the disease that has spread across six continents.
