It has been revealed that a number of Chinese donors contributing money to the University of Pennsylvania between 2018 and 2022 had ties to the Chinese Communist Party and Hunter Biden-linked companies.
While none of the donations were made directly to the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, which is located on campus, the rise in donations coming from China during that time period with links to Hunter Biden has raised some questions.
According to Fox News, between 2018 and 2022, donations from Chinese sources totaled over $105 million, with $75 million coming while Biden ran for president. While it had been known that Chinese donations to UPenn were high, the new figures are twice as high as was previously reported.
Records of the donations, obtained by Americans for Public Trust, showed that many of the donors were linked to the president's son and the CCP.
"We now know that the University of Pennsylvania—home to Joe Biden's namesake think tank—received a massive increase in contributions from China and Hong Kong as he was ramping up his presidential campaign, and has raked in millions from CCP-tied donors since he took office," AfPT executive director Caitlin Sutherland said.
She explained that given the recent reports exposing the millions of dollars the Biden family received from foreign entities, "this latest revelation raises further questions about the scope of President Biden's ties to China."
Cathay Fortune was one of the many Chinese companies that donated to UPenn. As Fox News reports, they have a controlling interest in a corporation called CMOC Group Limited, which in 2016 bought a cobalt mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the help of the Bohai Harvest RTS Equity Investment Fund Management Company, which was founded in part by Hunter Biden.
While Hunter allegedly sold his share of BHS in 2021, until 2020 he controlled 10 percent of the company. CMOC also donated to the university.
In a statement, UPenn vice president for university communications, Stephen MacCarthy, suggested nothing was out of line, noting that "no foreign funds were contributed anonymously, and no foreign funds were directed to the Penn Biden Center."
