Speaking at the Mark Twain Prize awards ceremony for Adam Sandler on Sunday evening in Washington, DC, comedian Chris Rock said that arresting former President and 2024 presidential candidate Donald Trump would only make him "more popular."
"Are you guys really going to arrest Trump?" Rock asked the crowd at the Kennedy Center, which included lawmakers Nancy Pelosi and several Biden administration officials, according to the Daily Mail.
"Do you know this is only going to make him more popular. It's like arresting Tupac. He's just gonna sell more records. Are you stupid?" Rock continued, which was reportedly met with laughter.
The comments come ahead of the potential arrest of Trump this week, in connection to payments made to his 2016 attorney Michael Cohen, who then passed on as "hush money" to Stormy Daniels, a porn star, with whom Trump had an encounter years before. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office, led by District Attorney Alvin Bragg, is seeking charges over the payments, which they say led to a second crime of violating campaign finance laws.
During his Mark Twain Prize speech, where fellow comedian Adam Sandler was being honored for the prize in American humor, Rock also took aim at President Biden.
"Trump was so bad as a president, he was so bad that Joe Biden had to burst off a monument. Biden was dead for 16 years," Rock said.
Speaking out on Truth Social, Trump slammed Bragg, writing "When Alvin Bragg first attained office, he made it very clear that, like many other prosecutors, there was no case against Donald J. Trump."
"Then the Biden Administration, the Democrats, and the Fake News Media began pushing him, and pushing him hard, and low and behold he said that there might just be a case after all."
Trump later added, "There was no 'misdemeanor' here either. There was no crime, period."
