As America waited anxiously to hear the verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial, a tragic situation played out in Columbus, Ohio that fueled Black Lives Matter activist anger. 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant died after a 911 call reporting a potential stabbing situation turned out to be true, and the responding officer had to discharge his firearm as Bryant lunged at someone with a knife.

Today, Interim Chief of Police Michael Woods held a briefing about yesterday’s incident.

“Officers attempted lifesaving measures almost immediately after the shots were fired,” Woods says.

They did CPR on scene, and it only took 90 seconds after the shots were fired that officials were notified about needing a medic on-scene. The responding paramedic arrived approximately six minutes after the shots were fired.

Then they played the two 911 call recordings in relation to the incident. The first one does confirm that the caller was concerned about a potential stabbing happening, and in the background you can hear shouting.

“We need a police officer here now,” the caller said.

The second caller was ready to flag the situation to 911, but as they began trying to do that, the police had already shown up. They arrived at 4:44 PM.

Chief Woods named Nicholas Reardon as the main officer involved in the Ma’Khia Bryant shooting. He joined the force in December 2019.

They the police played the footage from Reardon’s body camera. That in addition to body camera footage from the other officers on scene confirm the previously reported details about the Ma’Khia Bryant situation.

Such things are crucial as misinformation spreads on social media about the particular details of the story. Even after getting people to accept the fact Ma’Khia Bryant was armed, there’s some saying that police should’ve left the knife fight play out uninterrupted.

Earlier today White House Press Secretary blamed systemic racism for the police shooting. "So our focus is on working to address systemic racism and implicit bias head-on, and of course to passing laws and legislation that will put much needed reforms into place in police departments around the country."
